Below is an article about IDAL’s Stencil Certification program, which has been chaired for many years by Cathy Rinn, who wrote this article. Traditionally, applicants are guided in projects by the chair, with a goal of achieving stenciling certification. Then at an IDAL convention others who have achieved various levels of certification are appointed as judges and review submitted projects by applicants. The chair is excused from all decisions. Certified stencilers are announced at IDAL’s Annual General Meeting (AGM)
We offer a big congratulations to IDAL’s newest certified stenciler; Jittaun Priest!
Jittaun hails from Chicago and is a new member of IDAL. She attended her first convention in Charlotte of 2023.
Jittaun’s passing project was for Certified Stenciler; IDAL’s entry level for certification. She selected the “wall” category for her project which requires at least one full wall of a stenciled pattern. However, Jittaun professionally stenciled every wall in a bathroom using metallic paint. Her stenciling was crisp, clean, and precise. We are proud to have Jittaun as a member of IDAL and our newest certified stenciler.
The stencil certification program is the longest running program within IDAL and represents our roots as an organization. Jittaun joins a group of other certified stencilers who have demonstrated exceptional skills and excellence in the art and tradition of stenciling.
Congratulations Jittaun!
Interview with Jittaun
How long have you been stenciling?
I’ve been stenciling for 10 years. I started by making my own custom stencils and then evolved into purchasing more intricate stencils online.
What do you love about stenciling?
What I love about stenciling is its ability to transform walls to look like intricate wallpaper. I also enjoy how it allows for a customized touch by layering multiple stencils, creating unique and stunning effects.
Do you mostly stencil on walls or also on objects like furniture?
I mostly stencil on walls.
What do you like about being a member of IDAL?
What I love about IDAL is being part of a community of like-minded individuals who truly understand what I do and also help expand my creative knowledge. For much of my career as a decorative painter, I didn’t have many people to connect with who fully grasped what my work entails. Being able to talk to others who understand the unique challenges and nuances of decorative painting—and even speak the same technical language— gives me a sense of belonging and reassurance that I’m not alone in this business.
The IDAL stencil certification program is a cornerstone of our organization, honoring the art and tradition of stenciling. If you’re a decorative painter or stenciling enthusiast looking to showcase your skills, gain recognition, and connect with a community of like-minded artists, we invite you to join the IDAL stencil certification program and take the next step in your creative journey.
