Perfect for both beginners and seasoned decorative painters, this technique offers a versatile and budget-friendly way to add timeless elegance to your interiors. Whether you're tackling furniture, walls, or decorative accents, follow these simple steps to elevate your projects with the brilliance of gold.

Gilding with imitation gold leaf is a fantastic way to add elegance and shimmer to your interior projects. Using water-based adhesives like Aqua Size or Wunda Size offers a long tack time, making it perfect for large-scale or production projects. Follow these simplified steps to create stunning gilded surfaces with ease.

What You Need to Know About Water-Based Adhesive Size

Water-based adhesives, or “size,” create a tacky surface that allows gold, silver, copper, or metal leaf to adhere to your project. Unlike traditional water gilding, water-based adhesives are not burnishable and are suited for interior use only. Clean up is easy with water or acetone.

Step 1: Prepare Your Work Area

  • Cover floors and surfaces with drop cloths or newspapers.

  • Use low-tack painter’s tape to mask areas you don’t want to gild.

  • Lightly sand the surface with 220-grit sandpaper if needed to smooth out imperfections.

Step 2: Prime the Surface

Apply a water-based primer to your object or furniture. Spray primers work best for intricate designs, ensuring hard-to-reach crevices are coated.

Step 3: Add a Base Color (Bole)

  • Choose a base color that complements your gold leaf:

    • Red or terracotta for a warm, traditional look.

    • Yellow/ochre for a uniform gold appearance.

    • Black for a dramatic, modern aesthetic.

  • Apply the color evenly with a brush or spray, ensuring thorough coverage in recessed areas.

Tip: Experiment with different colors to create unique effects!

Step 4: Apply the Adhesive Size

  • Brush on the water-based size in a thin, even layer.

  • Pay close attention to deep recesses to ensure full coverage.

  • Allow the size to come to tack (usually 20 minutes) before applying the leaf. It remains tacky for up to 30 hours, giving you ample working time.

Note: Water-based size does not self-level, so brush strokes may appear in the finish. For a smoother result, consider oil-based adhesives.

Step 5: Apply the Gold Leaf

Surface Leaf (Loose Leaf):

  • Gently lift a sheet of gold leaf with its protective paper.

  • Place the leaf onto the tacky surface, rolling it out carefully.

Patent Leaf (Transfer Leaf):

  • Remove a sheet of leaf with its backing paper.

  • Press it firmly onto the sized surface and rub gently with a gilder’s brush or your fingers.

  • Peel away the paper, leaving the leaf adhered.

Repeat until the entire surface is covered.

Step 6: Clean and Finish the Leaf

  • Use a soft gilder’s brush or cotton balls to remove excess leaf (called "skewings").

  • Avoid stiff brushes, as they can scratch the leaf and dull its shine.

Step 7: Touch Up Holidays

"Holidays" are small areas where the leaf hasn’t adhered properly. Apply a bit more size and lay new leaf over these spots to ensure full coverage.

Step 8: Seal the Surface

Imitation gold leaf tarnishes over time, so a protective sealer is essential. Choose a sealer based on your desired finish:

  • Water-Based Sealers: Clear and quick-drying, like Dux Hydrocote Polyshield, offer excellent durability.

  • Solvent-Based Sealers: Dux Acrylic Topcoat provides robust protection against UV light and abrasion.

Apply with a brush or sprayer, and allow to cure fully.

Optional Step 9: Add an Antique Finish

For an aged, vintage look, apply an antique glaze. This step adds depth and character to your gilded surface. Explore antique recipes and techniques at www.gildedplanet.com.

Tips for Success

  • Test Your Tack: The adhesive should feel slightly sticky but not wet before applying the leaf.

  • Experiment with Bole Colors: The undercoat can significantly impact the final look of your gilded piece.

  • Seal for Durability: Particularly for high-use items, sealing ensures long-lasting beauty.
